First good thunderstorm of the season
Good morning blog world, it is a bit cold this morning. I let the chickens and ducks out of the henhouse, but I haven't let the teenage turkeys out of their dog cage. It is in the henhouse also, just to separate them from the much larger hens who do not like to share any food. It seems a bit too cool to let them out just yet.
It is finally beginning to feel closer to spring here on the plains of Colorado. We had a nice thunderstorm overnight after a cloud filled morning that netted us not more than a spit or two of moisture. Being in a deficit on the moisture side of things doesn't help. Neither does the fact that two of the four rain barrels are not functional.
This was the evening sky to the east and it looked much like the morning sky from the west that gave nothing. However, this sky did not disappoint. The northwest rain barrel was full and had signs of overflowing. I found that odd as it has a garden hose and an open valve to direct the water into a storage tank.
After seeing the evidence, I pulled the hose out of the tank to "prime" it. Turned out the end was under water and that prevented the "flow". Once it was above the water line it started siphoning into the tank. the other rain barrel does not have that excuse as that storage tank did not contain any previous water. In hindsight I could have placed the tank in a better position for use after collection, but I will figure it out when it comes time to use it. In fact, I may take care of that with the second tank before any water gets in.
As I have mentioned many times over the last couple of years we want to move. We, as in mostly him, because part of me thinks it is not the best use of our time left on earth. Then again, I get excited at the prospect of moving to an area of the country that allows for gardening with hopefully less challenges. Now that we have totally made that adventure hard to accomplish, we, meaning me this time, are at odds on the property choices. He has his mind made up. I have not. With that statement I will close this post and get busy with the needs of the day.
