First Field trip of the new school year!!

Today we followed through with our plans to have our first field trip of the year. Two other families were invited to join us on this adventure, but did not. In retrospect, they were the wise ones. On arrival to our destination the temperature was 104 degrees. Did we let that deter us?  Why heavens no! Should we have? YUP!

It took two cars to carry everyone in some fashion of comfort and for our group that is always a wise thing to do. If someone breaks down there is a second vehicle available to get help. Or if kids must be separated by more than a row of seats in a van, a second car is great!

The two hour drive down seemed more like three and the heat at the fort made the tour seem ridiculously long! We did not get to tour the whole place as it was just too hot to drag kiddos up and down and through the narrow openings with no way to cool off. It also was not our first trip to the fort for 4 out of the 6 kids there.

Luckily, in the area where the gift shop was located there was a bit of shade and some benches and a cool wagon to take a photo in front of.  So we did and it only took 9 times to get all six kids looking in the right direction! The gift shop only allowed four in at a time so going through that took a while. Good thing too, this old gray mare needed to check out the benches!

With a lighter wallet and some sweaty kids we headed out of the fort to have a picnic lunch. All in all the day took three hours longer than planned and we did not get to go to the train depot. On a prior visit we managed to squeeze that in also.

On the way home the little kids completed the worksheets for the trip and the big kids worked on theirs in a separate car. It is with a little bit of gloating that I proclaim the little kids were able to get all their answers correct and the big kids were stumped by three of the questions!

So that concludes our first field trip of the 2020/2021 school year.
